The readers of this book will discover a delightful individual who has enjoyed a long, accomplished career as a storyteller, labouring for a worthy goal. Hamner's biographer is Jim Person, who— while writing a scholarly article for the now-defunct Sherwood Anderson Review— wanted to find out more about the author of Spencer's Mountain, Hamner's book that served as the basis for The Waltons. Hamner was amazed at the interest, but Person was quick to recognize Hamner's role in the history of television. Then it's on to Roanoke, Williamsburg, and Chesapeake. I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. . Although I have been extremely fond of the Walton's since The Homecoming in 1971, it had never occurred to me to think of Earl Hamner as a prominent Southern writer in the way that I think of Robert Penn Warren, Thomas Wolfe, Eudora Welty and others.

With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way. There is a short bio of Hamner at the beginning of the book, otherwise the rest of the book is about his accomplishments. I would love to see that museum and see Earl Hamners house. His baby brother, James— Jim Bob in the series and the last Hamner to live in the family homeplace— died April 1, 2004, at 67. It makes me homesick for another time and place.

Remember the second hand washer that John boy bought for Olivia. A pervasive theme runs throughout Hamner's works and that is of a man forever taking a backward glance at his roots for direction in the way of what makes life worthwhile. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. Someday I will get over to that part of the country. I very rarely allow my daughter to watch anything on Disney channel, the kids all have poor respect for their families and are so spoiled… Very unrealistic to what real life is like, or what it should be like. Earl Hamner had a profound influence on my life, so it was definitely sad when he passed away earlier this month. I really enjoyed the start of the book, which talks about his life in Schuyler Virginia, however the majority of the book contains a synopsis about each book or movie he has written, mentioning many actors I have not even heard of in all honestly. I think that would be a really cool trip. Did you watch the Waltons? A new biography, Earl Hamner: From Walton's Mountain to Tomorrow, has just been released by a Nashville publishing house. An autobiography might have been better. When I heard of his death it really hit me hard, I am so grateful for him sharing his life and the lives of his amazing family. So in interviewing people for the book, did he turn up any skeletons in Hamner's closet? I loved this show as a child and will have to share it with my 9 year old daughter. We visited Ike Godseys store, and shopped in the gift shop, we were touched by all of it. I would have liked the book to be more focused on Earl's life and family which he based on The Walton's. That said, it was an exhaustive look at Hamner's life and influence and well worth the time I spent to read it.

It made me think back on the the days when we would all sit on the couch and watch the Waltons, just to pass a lazy afternoon away.
